Haitian children and adolescents fight against child labor

World Day Against Child Labor

Haiti is one of the member countries of the Regional Initiative Latin America and the Caribbean free of child labor.

The International Labor Organization (ILO) in Haiti and Engagement Participation Kapasite (ENPAK) brought together around 75 children and adolescents who participated in a consultation process to update the list of hazardous jobs in Haiti during the week prior to World Day against child labor (June 12), which this year has as its theme: “Safe and healthy generation”.

Within the framework of the project to combat child domestic labor - carried out jointly with UNICEF and with funding from the Government of Canada - the ILO in Haiti, in collaboration with ENPAK, mobilizes children and adolescents from various departments of the country , mainly West, South and Grand'Anse, in order to identify the set of jobs characterized as dangerous for them, so that it constitutes the argument for a plea before the state authorities in favor of the review and final validation of the list of dangerous jobs in Haiti.

Through this consultation, the ILO in Haiti renews its commitment inscribed in result 2.2 of the Country Program for the Promotion of Decent Work (PPTD 2015-2020) to accompany the Government and social partners in the fight against child labor and unemployment youth in deprived urban areas, as well as in rural areas, through a range of complementary measures (income-generating activities, vocational training, apprenticeships, social transfers, quality public education and child labor monitoring system) .

The results of this consultation were shared on June 12 as part of the commemorative activities for the World Day Against Child Labor. This date is a reminder to the entire world of the need to accelerate efforts in the fight against child labor and contribute to the achievement of Target 8.7 of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Through the “Safe and healthy generation” campaign, the ILO promotes an integrated strategy that includes adopting relevant policies to end hazardous child labor, guarantee quality education for all children, and combat safety risks. and the specific health of working adolescents.
