Conversation: Building a future without child labor in Latin America and the Caribbean

01 de March de 2019

Madrid, March 06, 2019

On the occasion of the 30 years of creation of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the centenary year of the International Labor Organization (ILO), this March 6 will be held the discussion "Building a future without work Childhood in Latin America and the Caribbean ” , which aims to give an account of the joint work carried out in the defense and promotion of the rights of girls, boys and adolescents in the region and the still persistent challenges, on which it is necessary to continue building imaginative solutions that allow us to move towards the future of work that we want and that the region needs. The event will take place at the AECID facilities in Madrid, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm

In recent years, Latin America and the Caribbean has achieved a significant and sustained reduction in child labor. Since 2014, the region has intensified its efforts with the creation and implementation of the Regional Initiative Latin America and the Caribbean Free of Child Labor (IR), made up of 30 countries, together with representatives of employers 'and workers' organizations. This intergovernmental cooperation platform has become an innovative instrument to accelerate the eradication of child labor and achieve Target 8.7 of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2025.

Spain has been a strategic partner in this fight. During the last 23 years, AECID has accompanied the countries of the region, in association with the ILO, in a continuous and successful process of strengthening policies aimed at ending child labor and, in particular since 2014, accepted the request of the IR to accompany a new cooperation model based on ownership and alignment, which is allowing the countries and interlocutors of the region to consolidate the results achieved and ensure that every day millions of girls, boys and adolescents can make their dreams come true to learn, play and grow up happy.
