Thanks to an inter-institutional effort, Argentina has its first survey on child labor with national urban and rural representation.
The Ministry of the Government of Labor and Employment of the Nation and the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC) affirm that in Argentina 764 thousand or 1 out of every 10 children and adolescents between 5 and 15 years old, that is, below the minimum age for admission to employment, performs productive activities oriented to the market, self-consumption or intensive domestic work. These figures and other details can be found in the report of the new Survey of Activities of Boys, Girls and Adolescents (EANNA) 2016/2017 .

It should be noted that, in addition to providing updated data on child labor, the differential value of the EANNA 2016/2017 compared to its predecessor, the EANNA 2004, lies in the expansion and organization of the sample population, since it allows identifying the characteristics of child labor by region and by rural and urban areas. In addition, it includes the participation of children and adolescents themselves, with which greater precision in the answers is estimated.
To achieve the successful completion of the EANNA 2016/2017, Argentina received the active collaboration of the ILO, UNICEF and the World Bank. The relevance of having new and better data on this reality, according to Jorge Triaca, Secretary of the Government of Labor and Employment, became more urgent with the application of Argentina to host the IV World Conference on the Sustained Eradication of Child Labor , carried out at the end of 2017. In this framework, the government decided to carry out the first EANNA with regional representation and include rural areas -grouped or dispersed- as part of the sample, since it is known that the highest incidence of child labor occurs there.
With this survey, the government will be able to better define the public policies necessary to tackle child labor and reorient the actions that are being carried out, in such a way that their impact and results can be maximized.
In this sense, the next steps are expected to continue exploring and analyzing aspects that have not been covered by the EANNA and to carry out complementary studies; Among these is the application of the Child Labor Risk Identification Model to estimate the probability of its occurrence at the municipal level and achieve territorialization of policies.
