New virtual platform on child labor

Within the framework of the International Day of South-South Cooperation

The Regional Initiative Latin America and the Caribbean free of child labor (IR) officially presented its new virtual platform www.iniciativa2025alc.org , within the framework of the International Day of South-South Cooperation.

 

This tool has been built to be a living space for dissemination, reflection, exchange and articulation among all actors from the public, private and civil society sectors that have committed to the prevention and eradication of child labor in the region.

The new website seeks to offer up-to-date information and resources to improve the capacities of countries to advance in the achievement of target 8.7 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which seeks to “… ensure the prohibition and elimination of the worst forms of child labor… , and by 2025 put an end to child labor in all its forms ”.

What is the Regional Initiative?

It is a platform for intergovernmental cooperation, with active participation of employers and workers, made up of 26 countries that have proposed to declare Latin America and the Caribbean in 2025 as the first region free of child labor.

One of the most interesting aspects of this Web page is its “Resources” section, in which the Regional Initiative makes available to Internet users a system for registering good practices in the prevention and eradication of child labor, a mapping of institutions that fight against child labor at the regional level, a web application on acceleration factors for the reduction of child labor in the region and a toolkit on migrant children. An application on SDG and child labor reduction will soon be included and it is expected to enrich and expand the resource base that will facilitate the use of the installed capacity in the countries and actors that are members of the Initiative and promote south-south cooperation to accelerate the reduction of child labor.

It should also be noted that the platform will be able to access the Initiative's social networks and its YouTube channel, spaces that have allowed the creation of an active online community for debate and proposals to innovate in the prevention and reduction of child labor and the protection of child labor. adolescent work allowed in the region.

The launch of this platform is the product of the effort and joint work between the governments that comprise it, the employers 'and workers' organizations, with the support of the International Labor Organization (ILO), which is in charge of the Technical Secretariat of the Initiative. Regional.

Authorities from different countries such as Aura Leticia Teleguario, Minister of Labor of Guatemala; Alfonso Navarrete Prida, Secretary of Labor of Mexico and Carlos Alvarado, Minister of Labor of Costa Rica, have joined the dissemination campaign of the Virtual Platform to make a call to action and work together for the present and future of the children and adolescents in the region.

María Paz Anzorreguy, Principal Counselor for the Americas of the International Organization of Employers (IOE) and Víctor Baez, Secretary General of the Trade Union Confederation of the Americas (CSA), also joined the launch of the platform and reaffirmed their commitment to promoting of a sustainable region without child labor, highlighting that it is a fundamental tool to promote initiatives on the subject.

Similarly, Beate Andrees, Head of the Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work Service, pointed out that this Web platform will be able to promote measures aimed at the eradication of child labor by 2025 in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. For his part, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, ILO Director for the Americas, reiterated the Organization's commitment to the countries of the region to achieve goal 8.7 together.
